recession=good for the christian music industry?
The Christian music industry has not been shielded from the current economic crisis. Even before our economy’s current situation illegal downloading has been weakening sales for some time. Now that people have less money to spend on entertainment, ticket sales for concerts and festivals have rapidly declined and many events are being cancelled. This has been hard on artists and workers in the industry (especially the recording industry) that was thriving just 10 years ago.
There is, perhaps, a silver lining. In the last couple years creativity in this industry has been dwindling because of the need for hits that will make money. However, in today’s market the hits aren’t even very successful. The result has been a resurgence of bands that are creative and more willing to do things cheaply. It has also begun to weed out people who were simply in the industry to be successful and make money. Since there is no money to be made, the people who are still involved are in it for the ministry. Check out this great article from Christianity Today that discusses all of this in detail.
